Many of our favorite children's books include a charming, one room schoolhouse, like Anne of Green Gables and the Little House series (Little House on the Prairie was based on it).
To get a flavor for how it may have been for children in those classrooms, you can take a tour of a Nevada State Historic Park that features The Elgin Schoolhouse. They've restored the structures and many of the original furnishings, desks, books, and even the teacher's quarters.
Elgin is in Lincoln County, near Caliente in southwest Nevada (near the Utah/Arizona border). There's a video about it on the state parks website for Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site.
